Unhappy 96 Explorer 4X4 binding issue

After using 4 wheel drive in the snow I was making a slow left-hand turn on dry pavement and I heard a grinding sound coming from the front end, them a clunking sound that made my car come to a halt. I switched out of 4 wheel drive back to 2 wheel and it seemed to free it up and I could drive again. Now I can feel and hear a noise that sounds like I'm still in 4 wheel drive when I'm not. My gas mileage has dropped a lot! I pulled off to the side of the road in some wet grass and nailed it, only the rear two wheels spun. I put it in 4 wheel drive (High) pulled forward a little bit, then nailed it again -- all 4 wheels spun like they should. Back to 2 wheel drive and only the two rear wheels spin. The noise and vibration seems to come and go but the gas mileage is still bad. Thanks in advance for all suggestions.

P.S. - My Explorer is a 96 4.0 V6 Auto. w/ control trac 4 wheel drive. 113,000 miles. Never had one little problem with this car.

Yeah!... I understand how the old 4X4's worked on dry ground but, the owners manual that came with my truck says you can use 4 wheel drive 365 days year if you want. It says the only drawback is worse gas mileage. I guess my question is does anyone know what I might have damaged on my truck that is causing the bad gas mileage and the noise and vibration?
