Exhaust leak
A few weeks a go I posted about an exhaust leak on my 97 F-150 4x4 4.6L. Well, I found it. But, I'm looking for ideas on fixing it. It is leaking where the flared pipe meets the driver's side exhaust manifold. The leak is minor, in fact it seals up when the engine gets hot. My first thought was to drop the pipe, clean up the ends and retorque it. However, after looking at the flange studs, I decided not to do this because I'd probably break the studs trying to loosen the nuts. Any suggestions?

I just looked at the manifold again. The studs look pretty corroded and the visible part of the shank seems to be narrower than the rest of the stud. I can't tell if that's the way it's made or if the reduced size is because it's rusted away. Makes me nervous to take a wrench to it.

I would heat up the nuts red hot with a cutting torch before I attempted to move them. Be prepared to remove the manifolds though in case they break. In other words I wouldn't try it unless I had lots of time.
