Hows it going? I'm going to say yes to better mileage as the mods I did to my '94 F-150 have given me approx. 6 more MPG, which puts me around 21 MPG. Thats driving speed limit though. Any faster and my mileage goes back down to about 15 MPG.
Headers should net some improvement in mileage, about 1-2 mpg I would guess. It also allows better breathing when you add other upgrades, allowing them to work to their full potential.

There's headers and there's headers. Length and diameter are both factors that affect performance. The question you should ask yourself, is what type of performance you want to enhance. You can increase your mileage, your horsepower, or your torque, but not all three. 4Wheel & Offroad magazine had an article explaining this a while back, and it may still be available on their website: 4wheeloffroad.com
Hey Towin Bob, The Mods I did to my 1994 5.8L are as follows. Mac shorty headers, Y pipe and 3" exhaust. Superchip, a March Under drive pulley kit, a Helix throttle body spacer and of course a K&N air filter. I also tweaked my Timing about 4 degrees (advanced)
