Unhappy Prices?

I just went up the Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort to go boarding and on the way up there I noticed that I was leaving a big cloud of smoke behind me as I was going up the Mtn. My friend told me that it was the head or the rings. It doesn't do this all the time (that I notice at least). I checked the oil 1 month and a week ago and the engine was 2 qts low, so I know that something is very bad. My friend also advised me to just rebuild the engine, or get it done. So my questions are:
#1 - What is the average cost to get the whole engine rebuilt?
#2 - Would it just be cheaper to throw in a new engine (i.e.: 302)

Also, I have an '86 B2 with the 2.9 FI with barely over 83k miles. Thnx guys!

sounds to me like it it was cold and snowing, it might have been condesation. best thing to do is to get yourself a compression gauge and do a check on it. youll then know whats up. those 2.9s are head crackerrs and gasket blowers man.

well, it was definitely smoke because it was going about a quarter of a mile behind me. lol it was a full on smoke. the only good thing about it was that no one was tailgaiting me. lol i have another friend that has a compression checker/thingamajiggy so i'll try that. but does anyone know general prices of how much it might be to rebuild the engine, or would it be cheaper to just put in a 302? thnx guys. oh, yeah, my mechanic friend said that it is most likely the head, but u guys are awesome so i thought i would ask all of you. thnx

Is it an automatic?? Not sure if the B-2 autos had a vacuum modulator or not. If it does & if it's leaking, it will suck trans fluid into the intake manifold & smoke like a crop duster.

White Smoke is a head gasket. It's steam coming from the combustion chamber. It will smell like steam. If you get two compression readings that are low and next to each other, it's a head gasket. Replace both! Heads on 2.9's normally crack when you run your vehicle in overheating condition for a period of time. As for Automatic trans, I know C4's had a vacuum controlled modulator not sure about A4LD or C3. If your burning transmission fluid smoke would turn gray to blue. Afterall Tranny fluid is petroleum like engine oil and will burn the same.

No kidding? I was up there this weekend also.

It sounds like a head gasket to me.

got my "compression" checked last night and, ....ho....well,......never mind...hehe.....sounds like a head gasket to me too.if you cant get it fixed right away, you can try water glass on it. itr will seal it up and youll be able to fix it at your leisure.

If you have the a4ld, the front tranny seal is known to blow. If it did blow, the fluid will pour on the exhaust and burn off a white smoke cloud looking as if you blew a headgasket. Check out the tranny fluid level and look under the truck to see if there is ATF all over the under carriage.
I blew my front seal and I swore I blew a head gasket due to the white smoke cloud behind me.
It might be the tranny front seal as well as all the other things listed above. To see if the modulator is sucking ATF up into the intake, take off the vacuum hose at the manifold and see if there is ATF in the line. If there is your vacuum modulator on the tranny is sucking up ATF into your engine.
