Please give me some help with this. After the choke opens it stalls out untill the engin warms up. Sometimes warming up dont help. When I try to start it up I always get some backfire through the carb. Engin vacum seems to be OK. It is a 87 F 250 with a 351.
Probably a clog catalytic converter and causing enormous pressure to back fire back inside the engine.
Try removing the O2 sensor out and start the engine and see if the engine runs fine without backfiring. If the engine runs fine without backfiring then it's time to replace the catalytic converter. I recommend free flowing catalytic converter.
Note: The exhaust will be coming out of the removed O2 sensor location and it will be loud.
It has a carb dude and no cat. Today it ran the worst. The only place it would run ok was from midrange and up but i did get some surging. Starting to look like a carb problem. The motor is a reman.
A loose timing chain will cause an erratic runability that can change with conditions. This can cause a backfire condition. The choke opening too soon, Bad valves, cam and/or lifters can cause the same. You should start with the carb(choke) and timing chain checks first.
Thanks for the help. The timing chain is the first thing I wanted to look into after the carb but it looks like a major job getting to the chain. Can I Just rotate the motor and look to see if there is slack
by looking at the rotor in the distributor or a valve ?
Looking at the rotor in the distributor while rotating the crank back and forth is an excellent check for this. If this is excessive, then the timing chain is loose.
