Fuel filter replacement

I am trying to relpace the filter on my '99 F-250 V10. Found the fliter location on the frame rail and was able to get the retaining clips off but can't remove the lines. I think there is a special tool to do this but don't know what the name of it is or were to get one. Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Jeff

P.S. just found this site yesterday and have already learned a lot from the posts.

You should be able to locate the fuel line diconnect tool at almost any parts store, its a pretty common item. Also be sure you "trip" the fuel shut off usually located behind the right side foot panel. If I remember correctly, you need to trip the fuel shut off, start the engine, let it idle till she dies, then you can disconnect the fuel lines. This is done to release the pressure in the fuel lines making it far easier to disonnect the fliter from the fuel lines, also prevents you from getting gas everywhere. Others on the board feel free to correct me if im wrong...this is the way i have always done it and it works for me.

You'll always get a get a little gas spilt when changing the filter. Heck, the filter alone holds over a cup. I've always done mine first thing after the truck has sat overnight or for several hours. Put the tool over the line and push it into the end of the hose. Then pull the hose and tool off together. It's a little snug but it will come off. Have a rag handy! I push/point the lines up so no gas leaks out while I remove the filter. To reinstall you don't need the tool just push the line on. It may take a few cranks to get the engine to fire. Don't panic.

Thanks guys, found the tool at the auto parts store. Good news is it's about $7.00 - $10.00 bad news is, everyone is out of them. Must not be the only one changing it out before winter.

Thanks again,
Jeff

Yep...

I've got mine on the bench, once I get the ambition... I bought a NAPA fuel line tool too and it's for crap. Had to get one from Advance AP to be able to do it.

I just saw your post on the fuel filter. I litteraly just bought my tool from Snap-On.com. At $28.00 tt's more expensive but they make "real tools". I also picked up a Snap-On fuel pressure kit on eBay. It connects to the system and allows you to safely relieve the system pressure. I haven't changed the filter yet but when the disconnect tool comes in I'll be on it.

Did anyone see any improvement in mpg or performance after changing the filter. I have 35k on my 250 and I'm changing it for routine maintenance but I'm interested to know if I'll get any improvements.

No improvements. I believe Ford recomends a filter change every 15k. The filters say every 10k.

It doesn't say anything about changing it at 10,000 mi. in my maintenance booklet.

Tool is cheap... I've had the el-cheapo plastic set since 1993!

Filter is cheap... about $8 at local Autozone.

Changing it is easy... unless you wait too long. Corrosion, debris, grime, etc can/will get into the fittings and make removal a PITA. Changing at the recommended interval will help keep the fittings clean and make replacement a piece of cake. I usually change around 20,000 miles.
