Anyone know of a way to check your coils? Could a bad one cause your engine to misfire? I got the blinking "check engine" light the other night and the typical engine stutter. The owners manual says the blinking light is when the engine is misfiring.
Motorcraft OEM platinum plugs....If you choose not to use OEM, you must use a platinum plug if it is a coil-on-plug set-up...
I use a low-amp probe to check coil-on-plug coils. Just connect to the hot side and you'll see the voltage ramp up, then drop sharply. If it ramps twice or does not drop as an almost vertical line, ya got a bad coil....
I have had to replace two coils and have been told it is a recurring problem due to moisture entering the coil. At low speeds the engine runs somewhat normal, but if you jump on it it will misfire or hesitate; it is at that point if you continue that the check engine light will flash. otherwise the light will just remain on.
Hey I just got the same problem . Did you fix yours ? I was driving fine & when I got onto the expressway and jumped on it the light started blinking & the engine would flutter .
I had the dealer fix the problem, so I am not sure what it would cost to do it yourself. But it sounds like the same problem to me. If your driving around 40-50 MPH then accelerate it will hesitate kind of like if you were running out of gas. My father in-law is a retired mechanic and he says that when system uses two coils, if there is trouble with one it will show when they are put under load ie: when your accelerating hard or high speed. It cost me $240 at the dealer.
can anybody verify that napa part# Im doing my tune up today and they say they dont show that part # or a spark plug boot for expeditions . I Figure my problem might be the plugs cause my truck got about 80k on it . But I would like to do the spark plug boots while everything is apart. The dealership dosent sell this part ?
Check your Number 4 cylinder. There is a heater hose directly above it along the firewall on the passenger side of the vehicle. That hose is known to leak onto your number 4 cylinder coil. Even in small amounts this will destroy your coil and cause you to get a check engine light for the engine missfire it is causing.
I got the plugs changed on Monday also with a new air filter , fuel filter, oil change , pcv . They changed 2 coil packs because they looked completely burned out . I couldnt get the boots from Napa , when I called the guy told me they dont show part# icb100 then I called another napa and they said it would take 4-5 days to get hear . I really wish I would have changed the boots. The truck feels totaly different , like a brand new one.Smooth idle & the engine dosent feel like your forcing it . I barely have to step on the gas & it jumps up to 60 in no time with no stress. Also the mpg indicator shows 9.2 instead of the 8 it used to showThat was for the first 2 days . Now the idle is still perfect . but its not as quick as it was any know what it could be . Im thinking that the throttle cable needs lubing cause Ive seen this being talk about lately . Also thing about cleaning the tb and maf
I have the exact same problem with a 99 expy, 4.6, but without the COP individual coils.. I have 2 coils with 4 wires each on the front of the engine(valve covers)... Mine pops and sputters when cold, and the check engine light blinks anytime I push her over 70,(or make the trans downshift under acceleration) and it kinda hops or jumps at low speeds, similar to the way it feels when you let the clutch out wrong on a 4 speed... I have had the wires and plugs done and that lasted for ONE WHOLE DAY... Time to pull the 4.6 and drop in a 427 side oiler...
