Been there done that. its an easy fix. Take door panel off. 2 screws for handle. remove from metal rod. do complete oppisite to put back together. Go to the boon yard and get one for 5 bucks!
But before buying the handle, just check the child lock. I've seen many people coming with complaints on rear doors that don't open from the inside. In most cases it was exactly child lock activated.
One friend of mine even disassembled the door looking for the source of the problem! And it was, again, the activated child lock.
I have replaced a few of these handles in both of my Explorers. As said above an easy fix. The panel is held on with plastic push fasteners so you can remove by simply prying the off starting at the bottom corner. My son broke another one a few weeks ago. The price at the local dealer had gone up to $19! They were less than $12 not too long ago. I felt ripped off.
have same problem but cant afford body shop $170- to $256 dollers they wont to fix it. if i can would love to do it myself also you take pannel off with the door stuck in the closed position if so how? and if so many people are having this problem why isnt thier a recall for it?.
I don't think you will be able to get the door panel off with the door shut without tearing the panel up. It seems unusual that both the internal and external door handles would go bad at the same time, so I suspect your problem is linkage related. Try and find a mechanic that knows how to 'slim jim' the door. They can usually do that in less than 5 minutes. At that point the door will be open.

I'm not sure that the panel can be easily removed (i.e. pulled away to release all the little clips) when the seat is in the way. Maybe if you slide the passenger front seat all the way back and can get the passenger rear seat out somehow (I have never tried doing that) you might be able to work on the panel with the door closed?
