Question Radio wiring problem. Need help!

Howdy all,
My question comes with a bit of history. I pulled an aftermarket CD player out of an '88 Sable. It had the Ford wiring harness connectors already. I installed it in my F150 and it worked fine. This morning I pulled it out of the pickup (it worked before it was pulled) and tried to put it in an '87 Clubwagon. It gets power, but won't make noise. From what I can see, the van uses a common ground for the speakers. My (near worthless) Haynes manual shows the wrong wire colors for the speaker harness. I tried a number of hookup combos with no luck at all. I can't get a peep out of ant of the four speakers.
I reinstalled the factory tape deck/AM FM deck, but am still bummin. I looked at the drinstall site mentioned in the archives, but they don't show anything on the common ground system.
I'll go ahead and list the wire color's and location in the connector just in case.
1. red
2. black
3. orange
4. empty
5. blue
6. empty
7. white (or lt green, i'm color blind)
8. empty
Thanks for your help folks,
-John R.

That's where I looked earlier, but they don't show anything on the common ground style wiring. Under the "do-it yourself" section, they don't have anything on the vans.

not to be relied on but----

i f my memory serves me. the van has 5 wire speaker at deck.
not 8. no common ground though.
fact amp under metal plate on top center dash.
2 plugs on it 1 with yellow wire is input.
other plug has 8 wires and they are spk wires that will have to be extened to reach new deck.
not same plug you have on your aftermarket.
i would cut and strip all 8 wires, use a 9 volt battery with wires till ya hear a spk pop.
when spk pop cone out toward you it is positive wire on batt pos.

too much info?
i maybe able to come up with colors but not sure if be right.

luck to ya

Now I am confused! Just quickly eyeballing it it looks just like the '90 F150. It uses the same power input (8 pin I believe, though some are blank) and another 8 pin connector with 5 wires running from it.
I did try backtracking from the front left speaker. It has an orange wire and a purple wire coming off it. Those run into a red one and a yellow one with a black stripe. I'll check out what you said about the amp if I get a chance in the morning. I've got the factory unit put back in so at least there's tunes. The only thing I can figure since the unit itself is different than the one from the F150, is that Ford may have not wanted to change thier wiring harneses for the vans as quickly as they did the pickups.
I'll hopefully get a chance to dig into it more tomorrow. I think pulling the radio out of the truck to see it's wiring may answer some questions. For now, I've had enough fun. Time for a beer and TV!
I suppose if it comes down to it, I'll run straight lines to the speakers. I'll also try digging around online to see what I can come up with on wire colors and how this thing works.
Thanks though Stevem. You've given me something else to look for. It may explain some of this stuff.
