I need HELP. I have a 1997 F-150 4.2 . About a month ago the battery went dead I jumped it and checked my alternator output it was not putting out. took it to my dealer & he put in a new battery and alternator. Now it puts out 14.6 most of the time but sometimes it stops putting out anything.
The dealer putin a new alternator yesterday and its doing the same thing????????
I just bought this truck 2 months ago and the dealer is paying for the parts, but its driving me and the dealer NUTS>>>
Being that late a model, I would assume it has an internal regulator in the alternator?
What are your symptoms now? It just quits and the battery is dead? Or do you go out in the morning and the battery is dead?
If it suddenly does not charge, to you have any indication when this happens(dash light comes on)? If you get a clue when it quits charging, I would have somebody watch while you go out and wiggle some wires around.
OK I went out and cleaned and tightened ever connection I could find......no help. I have a ham radio mounted in the truck and one of the screens you can bring up is a digital volt meter, I have checked this against what the battery is putting out and they are the same. Well after I tightened every thing up and started the truck it was at 12.5 volts, I looked in the owner manual and it showed a battery saver relay in the fuse box under the dash so for the heck of it I started to pull it out, well now I heared the alt. kick in. I dont now what is lose down there if its a plug or what but it is some how tied to that pannel....... I will be going back to the ford dealer on monday,,,,,,thankyou and if you have any ideas let me know...... Merry christmas Happy new year....ED
