What do you use to get the heavy grease/ground- in- dirt out of your Carhartts? I've been using a pretreatment called "Shout" and then hot water in the washing machine using Tide. They usually come out okay.
I wash them in really hot (180°) water, and use the double wash setting the machine has with detergent in both wash cycles. This gets all the visible grease out. They are dark blue but getting lighter colored after this treatment. I only use it when I have had a pretty greasy day, if not I just hang them up. This is a mechanic shop where I work 10 to 12 hour days also. On average I wash them about every other day of work.
carharts are suppose to be washed? i dont think mine have ever seen the washer and its very obvious... the front of my jacket and overalls are black from me wiping my hands on them .. but they are very torn up and worn so its time for new ones anyway. but when i get grease on my regular clothes i use hand cleaner, either fast orange or gojo .. works great
amen to that , they also seem to become wind resistant and when it really gets good you can just stand them in a corner at night and tell them to .'stay' . havnt had a pair walk off yet>
i also start out with the black ones , they seem to stay cleaner, longer that way. at least thats what i tell my friends that manage to get close enough

Okay, Bob/Chuck, my Carhartts are my "regular" clothes...and they cost more too. And thanks for the tips, everybody.

When I do wash mine, I use Super Clean, or Concrete cleaner (industrial)
and it gets it out well
I have a jacket that I work in, that hasnt been washed in around 5 years
but it usually doesnt get that greasy
Originally posted by furbis I use the power washer at work and they come out ok. if they are real bad we take them to the car wash so we can use soap on them.
Yep. The coin-op car wash is the best way to blast all the ground-in greasy crud out of the coveralls. Hang 'em in the clips meant for the floor mats & have at 'em. If the detergent doesn't dissolve the grime, get closer and blast the dirt out of the fibers.
I used to service industrial welding robots, most of which never get a wipe-down in their entire service lives. Oily welding dirt does not wash out with any detergent or chemical known to man. But the car wash can blast it out. People used to look at me funny when I asked them where I could find a car wash when I was done the service call. I always had to explain.
Car wash also for the mat you keep at the main entry door to your house. It's amazing what it can resurrect.
