i have a 1980 f150 351M 4x4, i got it a few weeks ago, and all of the wiring under the hood was jerry rigged. We thought we had it fixed, but when i took the truck for a ride and came back, and shut it off, it wouldnt fire back up, the battery was totally dead. We charged it and the truck fired up. pulled neg wire and it shut down, so we figured it was the alternator, it showed up fine after being tested 6 different times, the voltage regulator has already been replaced, and the started has been changed. but it still keeps killin the battery. there are 3 wires on the alternator, a red black and white(i think, im not looking at it at the moment)
the red and black are connected where the manual shows, but the white has been cut, and we can't find where it goes, no signs of another spliced wire or anything. we need help bigtime.
The white/black goes to the electric choke, and is not important to your problem. You first need to verify what's going on. Get a voltmeter and measure the battery voltage with the truck running at idle. It should be around 13.5-14.5 volts.
thanks for the wire location, we have checked the battery at different times with it running, its been every where from 14 volts down to 6. i dont know if something bad in my solenoid could not let my battery charge
