I was out changing my oil this morning, and while I was under there I gave the front driveshaft a turn to make sure the hubs weren't still locked in from playing in 4HI the other day. For the first time I noticed that if I spin the driveshaft, the knuckles right inside the wheel spin. I'm not sure if both spin, but does that mean my hubs are still locked in? I played around trying to get it to stop spinning by putting it in 4 HI and LO to unlock with no luck. Any idears?
If your hubs were still locked, wouldn't turning the driveshaft also turn the wheels (if they were off the ground). And if the hubs were indeed locked and the wheels were on the ground then the driveshaft wouldn't turn unless you could put some serious torque by hand. I think your hubs are working properly, but don't put too much stock in my opinion, after all, I have a 2WD.
When you lock the hubs it connects the axleshafts to the wheels. When you move the lever from 2HI to 4HI or 4LOW it connects the front driveshaft to the transfercase.
At all times the front driveshaft is connected to the axleshafts.
Meaning, if you have the hubs unlocked and the transfercase in N or 2HI, the axleshafts should turn when you turn the front driveshaft unless something is broken..
