Auto Start Problem

The keyless entry/autostart on my truck randomly keeps the starter turning, even after the truck has started. Had it tested at the installer, and the system is OK. He suggested that maybe the truck needs a tune-up since the auto start includes a sensor that looks at idle speed to disengage the starter. Does this sound right? The truck seems to run fine and idles fine.

I don't think so. It seems to me that the remote start keeps sending a signal to start the truck. I don't know about the idle sensor, thats a new one on me.

The remote starter relay could be sticking, or it is losing the pulse signal intermittently where the tach sense is tied in.

You refer to the installer so I assume the remote starter is aftermarket. My aftermarket Bulldog starter uses the higher voltage when the alternator is charging to indicate when the engine is running instead of a tach connection. It can actually be connected both ways but the "tachless" mode is one less wire to hook up. The problem with "tachless" is when the alternator doesn't work correctly, the remote starter doesn't know the engine is already running and will attempt to restart the already running engine. Check the alternator output.

Thanks. I'll give it a look after the holiday. I assume (i know, I know) that since the installer checked for the problem (which didn't happen in a full day at their place) that they would've checked that, but probably not. Is there any way to check for the sensor described in the prior post?
