It's kinda hard to read stuff posted inside your computer at home...

If those pics are uploaded to FTE though, I bet I can find a link for them in seconds.

I pretty sure it's a ford 8".It's got the M with the 2 C's in the middle which stand's for Michigan casting center,so it's definetly a Ford product.

The tag in the fourth picture. Is that the ID tag for the rear end?
It's really hard to see, but I'll get a crayon or grease pencil and rub the tag onto a piece of paper.

I need to ID the thing, because I want to figure out what gear ratio I need. The engine and tranny will be done soon after christmas and I would like to get everything hooked up.

Check out the website, let me know what you think.

If you cant get a rachet on the bottom two nuts then it's a 9 " rearend.... That ID tag will tell you right on it what ratio it is, One of my tags say 3.50 right on it. If worse came to worse and you are going to open up the rearend anyways, just count the teeth on both the ring and pinion gears. Divide the pinion into the ring and it'll tell you your ratio. If you memory is good , You'll remember talking to me awhile back. I am building up a 77 ford F100(started life also as blue 6cyl. ) Anyways, I stuck with the 3.50 gears and installed an Auburn Gear Pro Series limited slip differential. I am going to be running about a 28 inch tire and figured that would put me in the right rpm range around 65.

P.S. checked out your website, looks great your making good progress. I'm a little ahead of you right now as I've got my engine and tranny installed and my Cab finished and painted inside and out and installed. But things have been moving slow here also as of late. Take Care

that is a 9" with the earlier non-HD housing.
first group of numbers on that tag's second line will tell you the ratio. more than likely it is 3.00,3.50,4.11. these are the most common.

Here is what the tag says.

CM-8F 5JB
3 00 9 334A

I assume the gear ratio is 3.0. In addition, this is not a posi rear end. Does anyone know what spline count this has? Any additional information about this would be greatly appreciated.

you are correct. it is 3.00 ratio. As for spline count.....only way to know for sure is pull a shaft and count it yourself. or if it has no shafts. then pull the 3rd out and start counting.

More than likely it's a 28 spline. Be surprised how many of these trucks have the 28 spline rather than the 31
