87 Ranger 2.3L was running great when I stopped in driveway but when I tried to recrank it would not fire. Turns over fine but has no spark at all.....NONE! I took ignition module off and had it tested and it was good. Checked coil with ohm meter and it tested within ranges. My question is can coil test OK and still be bad. I don't want to take the distributor apart if I can help it.
Anything is possible.
Your starter system is the solenoid on the inner fender and just a plain starter motor, right?
My failing memory vaguely recalls something about a faulty solenoid switch preventing the ignition to provide spark.Hopefully there is another member that will remember this Ford quirk too.
The switch still allows the starter to turn the engine over, but the ignition doesn't work. Maybe a fuse-link has popped?

Not sure, but I think that you should have 12 volts from the ignition switch at the "batt" terminal of the ignition coil with the key at start or run. Might want to check that.
Well I've replaced distributor and still no spark! I don't know whay else to do but send it to someone who has all the gadgets to hook up to it. Man they rape you just to find a $10.00 part.
Electric fuel pump is working. Can hear it start when key is turned. Will check inertia switch but I still don't have any spark at all. Did check for voltage in wiring going to coil and found voltage. Still baffeled. It was running great when I stopped.
change distributor and still no fire...put new coil ...that did'nt help either...checked all fuseable links I could find and all OK..going to check computer module next for loose connection next. anybody else got any other ideas please send them along.
I show dark green/yellow stripe going to a splice from the splice one lead goes to the resistor and from the resistor to pin 4 of the electronic control assembly.
Another lead goes from the splice to the ignition module. And the 3rd lead goes from the splice to the instrument cluster. I'm getting this info from my 'electrical & vacuum trouble shooting manual" It refers me to the shop manual, but all i've found in the shop manual (so far) is how to replace ignition parts. Good luck with it.
Thanks! I have a wiring diagram of the ingition system and it shows the resistor but it does not tell anything about it. Tried to get it at Advance but they could not help me. It does have greenw/yellow stripe. It comes off the splice you talked about. May have to go to get it off wreck.
I cant find anything on that resistor either and if I had known how useless the factory shop manual is for trouble shooting this sort of thing I would'nt have bought it. With the key at run or start you should have 12 volts on red/light green at the ign. module, have you checked that? If you are good there I would think that this is either open in the wiring between the ign. module & the ECA or that the ECA is shot. I've read that a good way to check continnuity in a wire is to shove sewing needles thru the wire & check between the needles with an ohm meter. Might be a good way to check for continuity in that resistor. It will be interesting to see what the problem is as I also have an 87 & might be in the same situaton someday. Do keep us posted.
I had the same problem with an 86 2.3l. I originally found the source of my problem was a bad CPU relay and replaced it with a junk yard relay. But after fiddling with the wiring for a separate problem I determined that one of the wires that goes into the relay plug is loose and will come out of the plastic plug!
Found this out stranded in the middle of Utah at a gas station, 30 degees and a 30 mph wind howling a couple weeks ago. Hope not to repeat that one.
