I see alot in here about pros and cons of different swaps and advice on doing them, nobody seems to mention the computer and related parts. I have a 3.0, I can't just drop in a 4.0 without replacing all of that onboard stuff can I? Will a rebuilt 3.0 even go into my 1994 without a new computer? Everything is computer directed in these newer engines, isn't it?
Changing from a 3.0 to a 4.0 will require the 4.0 controls.
If your other plan is to rebuild the 3.0, then you have opportunity to upgrade the cam, etc.,etc. for more power. This way you can sit down and match all the upgrades to compliment each other.
Does rebuilding my 3.0 or replacing the 3.0 require changes to the computer? As far as mods I have gotten 197,000 out of mine so far. I heard that mods contribute to early engine problems. I am just trying to fiqure out what I will do next, there may be a problem with my oil pump or engine bearings, I am still trying to fiqure out for sure.
Just a straight rebuild, or putting in a used engine doesn't require any control changes as long as it is the same year/model doner vehicle.
Early failures are often the result of poor workmanship or badly mismatched upgrades.
You seem to be leaning towards the bottom end of the short block. Like taking out the crank, doing what it needs, then putting it back together with new crank & rod bearings.
How many clicks are on the engine?
the 4.0 will require a new trans, and mounts.if the engine firing order is the same.you can use your old electronics with just the 4.o calibrated maf sensor.or any 3.0 with your comp sensors and wiring.i think the injector plugs may be different on 99+ they have adapters available from old to new.the 99+ computers require pats and obdII connections which you don't have.so don't bother tring to wire in a new system.
i have a 2000 3.0 with 3k miles if your interrested.
Thank you for the info. Hopefully it won't be an issue anytime soon. My only concern is when I first start the truck, and for the first 15 or 20 minutes it is running, the oil pressure stays on the low side of "normal", after that it is where it has been for the rest of my 197000 "clicks". I think it may be the bearings or the oil pump, neither of which is an easy fix.
197,000 miles is pretty good service. If you want to keep the truck, how about geting a new engine ready to put in? Is the 3.0 bellhousing pattern the same as a 4.0?
I am not sure but I am sure it is in an earlier post. I was most concerned with the electronics. There has been plenty of places with engines, but none have the computers and related stuff. I am not real good with all that. I miss the days of no computers.
For whats it worth, I changed a 98 2.5l manual to a 2002 4.0l sohc automatic. It can be done, but it’s a big job. Anything that requires patts two will be a pain to get running. I would recommend using the same year engine if you can or just a rebuilt engine.
