I am trying to find out the tow capacity for my automatic 1988 bronco ll eddie bauer. Purchased new withe the towing package,
but lost the owners manual. Hoping to tow a boat that weighs around 3700 #'s about 2 miles 3 or 4 times per week during the summer. Thanks for any data or advice.
Best bet is to order an owners manual from www.helminc.com About 15 bucks. Your B-2 might be different, but the owners manual for my 87 Ranger shows that with auto trans/3.45 gears/2.9 liter/trailer brakes & a frame mount weight distributing hitch it can tow 4500 pounds. With 4.10 gears 5,000 pounds. Check with the dealer or order the manual.

If you do pull it I would make sure you have GOOOD brakes on the BII and some kind of trailer brakes also!! I hope its a 4x4 so you can pull that much weight up a boat ramp.JM.2W
if it were me, i would keep an eye out for an inexpensive tow vehicle, like n old ford PU full size. why chance it and burn something up?....just my opinion.
pat67shorty is right, you need to find out what gear ratio you have. Look on the Safety Compliance Certification Label on the driver's door pillar. At the bottom is a set of numbers. The 5th box to the right is labeled axle with 3 characters above the word axle. There will probably be three characters, but you only need the first 2.The codes are as follows.
42 FORD regular 3.45
44 FORD regular 3.73
D4 FORD locking 3.73
D7 FORD locking 4.10
Once you find that, check these for the amount of weight you can tow.
It's broken down in 2 sections dealing with the trailer frontal square footage.
"Trailer frontal area not to exceed base vehicle frontal area".
3.73 0-2,000lbs
4.10 0-2,000lbs
Trailer frontal area, 50 sq. ft. max.
3.73 2,000-4,500lbs
4.10 2,000-4,500lbs
This came from pages 153-156 of the 88 Bronco II Owner's Manual. Hope it helps.
BTW, Ken can I attach anything, such as a .pdf or .jpeg of pages of the owner's manual? If so, how? Thanks.
