Changing out block heater?

I'm in Maine and it's winter.. I'm not big on doing work in an unheated barn at 10 degrees! Does anyone know what's involved with changing out the block heater on my 2000, F-250. 7.3 diesel? The dealer is telling me 2 hours labor plus part ($38). I figured this is also a good time to flush and fill the coolant system too since it's got to be drained.. Does this sound like the way to go and is the labor estimate reasonable?? Thanks..

The replacement of the block heater would be simlpy a matter of unscrewing it and installing a new one. The time involved is the draining and refilling of the cooling system. The dealer can probably do in less than that time, but is flat rating the labor time. I would say it is a pretty reasonable quote.

Thanks! Doing it myself is not an option up here this month!! They quoted me an additional $90 to flush and fill the coolant system. Since they have to drain things down anyway, should I skip the flush and fill or will they just reuse my old antifreeze if I don't??

Welcome to the forum Shep, I'm also in Maine. Minot, down near Auburn. Block heaters are a must have! If you're quick, you could swap the heaters out and only loose a gallon or so of coolant. Bringing it into the dealer is a safe bet though,
Ed

Isn't winter great. 10 degrees? Man I thought 41 was bad down here! Freeze, Wallet. Freeze, Wallet. *Wallet!* I feel for ya Shep. These things usually go bad this time of year. It's a pretty simple job as Ed mentioned but I know y'all wrote the definition of cold up there.
