I need to change my a/c compressor clutch.
I've never had to change one before...never done it, and Chiltons doesn't show anything about it.
Is it as simple as removing that center bolt ?
Is there a trick to it ?
You have to use a puller to remove the clutch. It is very difficult to remove without it. The puller is of a special type which you can find at better parts stores.
Usually you can get these at Autozone. They have a Loan-A-Tool program. Basically you buy the tool. Use it. Bring it back and get you money back. It's free use of a tool. And they do have A/C clutch tools.
Not sure which one you are working on but if you have the "5 legged" compressor, 4 bolt tabs on the bottom and one on top (AKA and FS6) you can take the bolt out and use two screwdrivers to pry it off. It's surprisingly easy and should take little pressure. Putting the new on is even easier.
Note that this does NOT apply to all compressors, only the one above. If you have an FX15 (held on by 4 bolts that go all the way through it) you have to use the correct removal tool. Many compressors are made in such a way that if you pry on them you will surely ruin either the clutch, the compressor, or likely both.
This trick applies only tot FS6 types as far as I know. I've done it many times and have yet to find one that didn't come right off. This is not to say there aren't some well-stuck ones out there that require the special puller. Take care.
mine's the FX15
I'll definately get the puller.
I replaced the compressor and clutch together during the summer
All I can figure is I had the old belt on too tight...it's dragging
