What exactly is the cause of lights/dashlights ect.....dimming and brightening when the engine is rev'd up?
My motor is running fine...............I think my fan belt is tight enough. I'm just trying to isolate it because after recently installing a cd player in the truck, the power fluctuating causes an annoying crackling noise to the point that i shut the thing off.
Theres not too many choices, of what it could be. Any ideas before I start the hit and miss troublshooting.
Agreed. With many other things running, and motor at idle there is not enough current available to run everything. That is why your lights are dimming. Headlights are a BIG draw item. At idle your alternator is not putting enough out to keep up, and if your battery is older it does not have enough power to keep up either(or if it is a smaller sized battery than needed).
With the production of electricity comes "noise". That buzzing sound that radio's pick up. It is the magnetic field in the alternator.
I would suggest maybe hooking your new radio directly to the battery(with inline fuse). This will help eliminate any "electrical noise" you may be getting thru the fuse panel.
If you want it to turn off with truck. Install a relay that is powered thru the key. That way it turns off when you remove the key.
I had the same issue with the dimming lights at idle. Try replacing the regulator with the solid state style (it has a low profile cover). That seemed to help a lot with the dimming and eliminated the flicker effect. It seems to kick in at a little lower rpm, enough to make a difference.
That noise in your cd player could aslo be if your using non resistor plugs, and wires, make sure your alteranter has a isolater on it like a $5 doller part try that and make sure you have a fuse between your battery and your cd player, goodluck
The problem revealed itself. I switch to a solid state voltage regulator wich mad no difference with the dimming problem, but only set me back 13 bucks. No biggy
On the way home from the auto parts store my stereo/cd player
started working and sounding great. at the same time i noticed i had lost my signals and break lights. Turns out the flasher was in the process of shortling out and finally died. It took out the fuses. But thats what was making the noise in my electrical system.
Thanks for all the tips.......
