OK first time for everyone and everything, I guess.
Stats:
63 F100 narrow box (I'd say step side, I know that's incorrect)
302 conversion w/ std truck 4 speed
(wish the guy would have left the 302 / auto, but that is another story)
Mission profile:
Basic daily driver (I'm semi retired, no commute)
Utility in nature, not afraid to haul stuff but will probably put protection down for the wood and sidewalls when I haul stuff.
No heavy pulling. Worst case scenario is to pull a small to medium sized trailer with my BD-5T inside. Best scenario is to bebop around town looking good.
Saw the comments about c6 vs c4 for the 302 and am all right with the c4 as an auto. Has any one put a "car" type 4-speed in a similar application? I really hate grinding noises when I shift.
Well, i think you are talking about the 4 speed top loader. I would go with a NP 435 out of a late 70's pickup, they are the toughest manual tranny ford has ever put in their pickups. A t-18 would do also, both of the transmissions can go through alot of torture. A T-19 sounds good for your application. A t-19 does not have a really low granny low the NP 435 or the T-18, but it does have closer gears and a synced 1st gear. The grinding noises your are hearing is a junk transmission. There is a possibility that changing the fluid out for some 80-90w would clear that up, or it could be a simple clutch adjustment. What tranny is in there now?
I really do not know, at this point, what the actual tranny in my 63 is. It is a top loading 4-speed with the granny low first gear. Is there an easy means to ID the tranny?
The grinding noise(s) are actually my attempt to turn the trans into junk. Too many years of auto only. If I take my time in the shifting, it usually slides right in.
Like I stated earlier, I'm not out to be able to haul Atlas and his load. Just minor stuff like power tools and the like. I do have the opportunity to pull a small trailer. It would be some where in the 2500 pound range when loaded.
When I purchased this truck, it came with the restoration history (receipts for engine rebuild, engine swap, when he bought new oak panels for the truck bed, etc) I wish he would have left the other 302 with auto in it. Oh well, can't have everything. I found a biz here in PHX that will install a c4, redo the drive line and all the other little things for $1,450. Anyone have a reality check on this price?
There 3 heavy duty top loading transmissions ford uses. First the NP 435, it had a aluminum top on it, 2nd 3rd and 4th were synced, 1st and reverse wasn't. The T-18 was the same as the 435 except has the cast iron top, and had bushings where the 435 had bearings. The T-19, looked exactly like the T-18, except 1st gear was synced.
Go with the C4 trans. It will work fine for you. if you really want a stronger trans then get a small block C6. It will hold up to anything you can throw at it.
As for the $1500 price I couldn't pay that. A rebuild on a C4 shouldn't be that much and the only other things you will need are a shifter and maybe a new drive shaft.
I would fine a back yard guy that would or could perform the job for you at half that price. You may even find someone that would be interested in your trans.
The car trannies like the t-10 would be o.k., but they are a little high geared to make town driving easy. I would go with the c-4 because they are cheap, plentiful and easy to work on. For the 1500 price tag, I would look around a little. Add 500 to that and you could have a nice install done with a good aod that would give you overdrive for long trips and just as good of reliability.
Check with the mustang forums, and classic truck places. There is a lot of info out there, you just have to dig to get it.
