i have a question about painting. I just got a 99 ranger and im trying to sell my old car. The clear coat was coming off before so i tried to paint it myself. I made 2 mistakes: i didnt sand it enough and i used spray paint cans. now i bought a spray gun and quality paint and am going to try it again. The problem i have is that where the clearcoat was coming off before shows through even after being sanded and painted. If i spray primer over the bad spots will it show through? And is spray can primer alright or should i get some primer and sray it with the gun? Im trying to go cheap, since im going to sell it anyways. It is a 89 Mercury Grand marquis.

Picture a three or four layer cake. You take a spoon and scoop out the middle, going down into the interior layers. Boy that cake was good but you have a problem. Part of the cake is missing. To hide what you did, you spread frosting over the hole. The problem is, the hole is still there although you spread frosting over the cake.
Paint is the same way. You need to fill that hole you made when you sanded. Multiple layers of primer will fill the hole. Then you sand everything flat by blocksanding.
There is no quick fix for peeling clearcoat. You sand until you have good substrate. Then you repaint and clear.
