Fuel pressure

How much fuel pressure should my '74 390 4barrel require? I have a gauge connected to it and it reads 4-5 psi at idle. When I get on it I can bring it down to zero and run it out of gas. Is there a minimum psi I should try to obtain by putting on different fuel pump? The mechanical pump has been removed and an electric installed. I have three tanks, the stock rear (above spare) and two aux saddle tanks (forward of the rear wheels).
Thanks fo any help....Mike

I'm not sure what the specs are for a factory carb system, but I'd guess you're looking for 5-6 psi; with an Edelbrock carb, look for about 6 psi ALL THE TIME, with a Holley or Demon, between 6-7.5, again, ALL THE TIME, even at WOT. If you don't have consistent fuel pressure, it's tough to set float levels and such, not to mention that running the carb empty on a WOT run can make it lean and hot enough to start burning up expensive stuff in a hurry.

I have a Holley 650 on a Edelbrock intake with a Melling cam (RV). I guess I should look into a higher displacement fuel pump.

You might want to try an Edelbrock high volume mechanical pump. It should keep up fine.
