Power Steering Again
It's not the bendix one that everyone complains about with Headers.
I don't like the big round pump
Will any pump work for it?
I was thinking maybe one for a 94 or so F-150
As I like the looks of those
I know I'd proboally have to make brackets
but I could do that
Anyone can help me out on this?
For example, on my '76 F150 with a 390 when the cannister type pump went out, I replaced it with a spare pump I had from a '78 F-150 with a 400M. The pressure hose and fitting were different, so I used the '78 pump and pressure hose on the '76, and it worked just fine. When I bought a new hose, I asked for one from a '78, and it was correct. It bolted right up to the FE brackets.
According to the parts people, the Ford PS gearbox is the same '69 or so to '79. It is the fittings on the pumps that are different.
So, if you are sure you have the Ford box, you should be able to use any pump from '70 to '79.
All 2wd steering boxes from 73 to 79 are the same, but before 73 it can be either a Bendix or "Ford" (aka Saginaw built) type.
They definitely are not same steering box. Bendix box is bigger, takes more PSI to run, gets in the way of many non OEM exhaust system changes, makes 460 crowded & is "older tech/ style.
Ford/ Saginaw box is smaller & runs less, constant/ consistent PSI. Has high RPM Fade feature, commonly called and/or known as "slipper technology", to maintain sense of "Road Feel" at high speeds eliminating tip toe effect. In addition to "tip toe" problem from Bendix pumps running higher constant/ consistent, PSI, any sustained operation at high speed w/ Bendix Pump used with the low operating PSI, Boxes, aka Ford/ Saginaw, can & often does lead to seal & "O" ring failure. On other side of that coin, using lower PSI, Variable Output, Saginaw pump can cause chatter & binding in Bendix Boxes as Saginaw Pumps don't make enough PSI to run Bendix Boxes right.
Since all F Series, OEM, P/S systems, 73 to79. are same, so are pumps. They too are Saginaw. In fact I've used GM pumps, in a pinch, by R&R-ing GM Pulley with FoMoCo one. You're 100% right/ correct about later pumps being same internally as 73-79s'.
Therein is solution to hose & fitting problems. This fitting dilema can be corrected as you say by having hose made up with "press release fittings" on one end & thread on other, OR you can simply change fitting inside pump, back to old threaded style.
Of course reservoir must come off to do that. If I do it, I usually replace Plastic Reservoir and Wide Mouth Filler, Cap & Dipstick for steel one w/ small dia fill tube & metal dipstick of early 73 up to 76-78. or so pumps. It's not "ROCKET SURGERY" by any means. But, reservoir sealing "O" rings must be replaced & properly fit & lubed or else they leak mercilessly. Once "year correct" reservoir is installed right, OEM/ OEM style after market replacement hoses will fit & work right, forevermore.
The advantages of getting & using Saginaw system are many. It is an important factor that Saginaw made "Ford" P/S Pumps are same right up into late 90s, that I'm aware of. Besides superior operation & efficiencies, many sets of mounting brackets exist for all types of later, desirable engines. Time is coming when FE & "Y-Block" brackets will no longer be available and the supply of these older engines will also decline.
Eventually older engines get replaced by newer ones. By using Saginaw built, "Ford" P/S System now, if/ when engine time does come along, all it req's is merely getting brackets with new engine because truck will already be Saginaw style. All can be easily mated/ matched up. If Bendix Style, there's no brackets to mount Bendix Pumps on late engines. They must be fabbed, or P/S will have to be changed to operate right with later pumps.
On my 71 460 I am running a Ford/ Saginaw Pump off an 88 Grand Marquis, w/ 78 F250 V groove Pulley & 460 Block Brkts, and a 76, F150, 360-FE, Ford/ Saginaw Reservoir with correct hose fittings. It's a "collage of parts, but it looks/ works like OEM. Also, FWIW I do not use ATF in my P/S, I use 5w or 10w Hydraulic Fluid w/ a non varnish producing anti-foam agent.
Just thought I'd contribute this into the thread. It took me a while to arrrive at this set up but it's been working fine for about 10 yrs. Oh yeah, I run the little, 70's oil cooler in return line too.
