I have a 92 bronco that appears to have a factory trailer brake controller, but can not find out much about it. I have voltage at my trailer plug on the trailer brake pin, but it is too low to be effective in braking. According to my EVTM there is a factory trailer brake controller module behind the left kick panel, and after taking a look, there is indeed a module of some sort up in there. However to reach requires removing the alluminum bracket that the e-brake pedal is attatched to. Anyone know anything about these?
Not familiar with Bronco/F150 differences but from what you describe, that was the location of the ECU on my '93 F150. Take a look at the firewall (from under the hood) and see if there is a large wiring harness that plugs in about the same location as the "module" you are seeing. If so, it's probably the ECU and not a trailer brake controller.
I don't ever recall seeing a brake controller listed as factory equipment in any of Ford's towing packages. But in any case I agree with NoMo. The module in the kick panel is most likely the engine control module. If Ford did equip it with a brake controller, it would be mounted somewhere that the driver could see and access it. Brake controllers usually have some sort of manual activation lever and they all have an indicator light to tell you the controller is working when you step on the brake.
Agree with horsepuller--have never known Ford to have a 'factory
brake controller'--have had many trucks starting with an '82 Bronco, even with a tow package, no controller. They didn't start putting 7-pole plugs on the trucks until around '97, with the new body styles, I think.
