Stupid questions
I have a 99 F250 4x4 w/ a V10. I understand that the 99 series V10 only puts out about 265-275 hp. What did Ford change on the subsequent model years, that allow the engine to put out 300+ hp?
Is it possible to alter my engine to put out the 300+hp without spending big bucks or risking internal damage down the road? I have already changed the air intake to a K&N Gen II air filter but did not notice much difference.
Thanks,
Luggs
, Welcome Aboard! You'll love it hear. Many wise Ford Guru's here. From something that I heard, the horsepower change was due to a change in the internals. Not sure exactly what it was, timing, cams, pistons, bore?? Not sure. Someone will chime in in no time to correct this. Also you can search in the V10 forum down the page for more info. You can always get a chip to gain a little HP, intakes usually don't gain you that much, just free up breathing. Again WelcomeThere are no stupid questions.
I believe the changes were in the intake and heads and that a retrofit would be quite expensive. I'm afraid I can't give you much more detail than that. Check out the V10 forum. If there's nothing current, I'd bet that a quick search would find the answer to your question.
In the future, try to be as specific as you can with your post title and give as much background info as you can. This helps attract attention and gives people the info they need to help answer your question as best they can.
If this forum frowned on stupid questions or goofy replies there'd only be about 10 posts a day in here.

All questions welcomed here..... great group of folks to help you out.

As for your '99 V-10 and the diff's between subsequent years, I would
suggest posting in the V-10 forum specifically, and labeling your
post title to reflect your exact question (as Waxy indicated). This
way you will get the best folks to respond the quickest to your
question.
As for general perf. mod.'s to help out, short of boring and new
pistons, crank, etc.... the easiest mod.'s are to open up the
breathing (as you have done), increase the computer performance
parameters, and make it exhale better (exhaust). Others also have
found some luck putting in higher flowing injectors and modifying
the throttle body.
So jump on in and have fun with us! We won't ever tell you it'll be cheap!

The added horsepower was found in the heads.I think they also changed the specs."grind" on the camshafts also.
I wouldn't worry too much about the difference in advertised horsepower. The later model V-10's had the Y-pipe necked down to reduce somme noise concerns,"flutter",and it it probably reduces the power a bit also on them.I'd quess Ford probably didn't dyno the higher hp.V-10 with the necked down pipe either.
A good chip would probably make up any hp difference.
Oh yeah, good to have you aboard!
