Hey evryone, my kid has a 99 Ranger Sport with the 2.5 dual coils and 2 plugs per cylinder, any one know how to put a tach. in it? we tried once and the tach only read 300 rpm's. Ive also posted on the 4 banger board hope some one can help, Thanks Warren
There should be a tach feed wire coming out of the ignition module, or computer. Also, try setting the tach to V8, maybe that will help since there are 2 plugs per cylinder.
I have a 1999 3.0 XLT 4speed auto, and i have the non tach. gauge cluster, i was woundering if it is possible (and not overly insanely complicated) to replace it w/ the gauge cluster w/ a tach.
Also any one know much about adding after market cruise?
Hey all how are you today? My boy has a 99 ranger sport 2.5 4 banger, and he wants a tach. in it, we have tried to install one but with dual coils and eight spark plugs we are not sure how or where the leads go, we tried it once and the tach only read 400 rpm at an idle and helpfull hints? thanks Warren
ha, i had a 97 ranger with no tach also and wanted to install one. i learned the hard way. the tach signal you need comes out of the powertrain control module. you dont need to take the pcm out, you just need to splice into a wire that is part of the harness that is plugged into the pcm. ok, first locate the pcm. its on the firewall, near the top/passenger side of the engine compartment with one bolt in the middle. its rectangle. unbolt the harness and unplug it. what you have to do is splice into a wire that is bundled in there with all the other wires, being held together with black tape. on my 97 the wire for the tach signal was brown with a white stripe. now if i were you i would call your dealer and make sure it is the same wire. if it is, just splice into this wire, connect your tach wire to it and tape it back up and plug the harness back into the pcm.

You probably could get a speedo shop to turn the numbers over for you. Just for the sake of keeping needles in line and in one piece, that's how i would do it.
As for aftermarket cruise, JC Whitney's has kits....if you happened to find some junkyard trucks with the cruise still intact....well, you'd have to swap a lot of stuff for that.

I'm not familar with the non-tach clusters, both of my Rangers have tachs, but they are electronic so location wouldn't matter. Just make sure you get on from a similar year.
