83 Ranger Fuel Pump replacement

Hey guys,
A buddy of mine here at work just bought an 83 Ranger 4X4 with the 2.8 V6. It needs a fuel pump and he is planning on replacing it.
Apperently it is a mechanical unit and he said that it looks pretty tough to get to. Do you guys have any suggestions?
He felt like there might be a pushrod mechanism that opperates it like a ch##y. If so, is there a bolt that can be remove in the front of the block and replaced temporarily with a longer one to hold the pushrod in place?

I haven't actually seen the engine or fuel pump, I just felt like someone here might have an answer.
