I have a 2003 f150 4wd with manual trans. when I shift into 4wd high and turn left or right, the wheels almost lock up. Its like the parking brake is on. If I dont put the clutch in, the truck will stall. The dealer says this is normal, even though it was not doing this when new. I was wondering if it could be viscous coupling failure in the transfer case? Need help!!!
The transfer case doesnt have a viscous coupling in it. It is either in or out of 4x4.
On bare pavement or any surface with good traction what you're describing is normal.
Racerguy is right. But it depends on how hard you're turning the wheel. If you're in 4wd, don't turn the wheel all the way...it binds right up.
However, if it does it after turning 1/2 way, you might have more problems. I had a similar problem and found that the mounting bolts on either the transmission or transfer case had loosened up. When I turned the wheel, it was allowing the x-fer case to shift slightly and put things out of alignment.
I have a 2003 F-150 and I accidentally turned the 4x4 switch instead of the fan switch while I was pulling into a parking spot and it did something I don't ever want to feel again. Bang! and like locked up. All is fine, but you cannot engage the 4X4 on dry pavement or it will do exactly what you're describing. It works flawlessly in wet or slick conditions.
