Ok my problem is my ranger is having a "delayed engagment "problem when i first start out if i start it up and shift right away it does not go it just revs then bangs into gear its an auto i took it to a local guy he said take it to a tranny shop it maybe a cellinoid or it may need a rebuild any one have any experience with this sort of thing any idea how much it should cost?
I'm not really into trannies but I woulds suspect a dirty valve body, internal leak, or a problem with the pump, I would change the fluid to start with.
Did you change the filter and flush the torque converter? Also does the tranny do it in forward and reverse; or just one or the other? How many miles on the tranny? Also what year, engine, 4wd, etc.? Sometimes that makes a difference. I'm not sure which solenoid the local guy is talking about, but will sure try to help if you will answer these questions.
Thats why I suspect an internal leak as one of the possibilities, as it warms the parts expand and seal. There is a port for testing the pressure but I forget were it is right now, a manual should tell you.
I have no idea $$$, it would really depend on the exact problem but it shouldn't be giving you problem at 30k or 47k. What year and who did the work at 30k and what was done. Can you confirm its only drive, I'll look in my manuals and see if I can find out more tomorrow.
XLTdav-we need a little more info. Sounds like you are on a budget and need to keep the costs down. I can relate!!! Did the filter get changed and was the tranny flushed? What does the fluid look like right now? Is it pink and cute or does it look like what a baby does to a diaper? That is probably the first and most important indicator. Waiting for a reply.
Ok first ill tell you the origional trans change was done by avis lube (I know I know) at 30000 miles at about 40 i started noticing the trans fluttering i took it to a shop they took it apart and found that it had the wrong filter it had a two wheel filter not four wheel so they did another fluid and filter change and its been good till this week fluid is red i know its mercon 5 i watched it go in so i dont know im gritin my teeth i still owe $7000 on the truck
First, be sure that there's no oil missing. A relatively small amount of transmission oil missing in a Ford transmission will give that kind of symptoms.
Second, change the "VACUUM DIAPHRAGM". (15$ max + 1/2 hr instal.)
It is protected by a heat shield and is close to the cat converter.
Will also give the same symptoms.
Just happened to me...with a 1994 Ranger XLT 4X4 supercab 4.0L
But I'm kind of lucky to have a good mecanic really trying to satisfy his customers instead of making lots of money on their back with unnecessary costly repairs.....
The vacuum modulator controls the TV pressure. If it's faulty the truck will shift at high RPM. Test to see if it holds vacuum before removing it. Sounds like your torque converter is draning down, or the seal on the filter is leaking. Check the line pressure first! should be around 75-125is @ idle or 200-300 in reverse.
Ok so the trans shop installed a "updated EPC Solenoid "and it seems to have done the trick the mechanic told me the old one had alunimum parts and this new one has steel .He said it something ford knows about thats why theres an updated part . I can tell you this it seems good it jumps right into gear now beter then when it was new so im crossin my fingers.
