a cam question

it is said the bigger lift and less duration makes a torquer motor but whyor how does it do that with so little burn time.

How small are you talking. There is a point where less duration makes less torque everywhere in the curve. I am willing to be that the Crane 901 or edelbrock performer cam makes every bit as much torque or more at 1,000 rpm than the stock cam.

What do you mean by burn time?

I was referring to Burn time as degrees of duration. The rv cams have less duration then the 901, I think anyway. So it is less time or degrees that the valves are open.

It all comes down to airflow and reversion. If you can get the same amount of air in by less time(duration) and more lift the engine will make more torque. The valves are both open for a period of time(overlap), this isn't a big deal at high rpms, but at lower speeds it causes poor airflow, less cyl filling and hence a smaller bang. I don't like rv cams because they generally trade off too much upper rpm power for a small increase in lo rpm torque. I agree with Ratsmoker that a good perf cam will make more power across the board than the stock cam! They are designed for smooth no trouble operation, not power. My first 390 had a 284*/284* .563/.563 cam and it made way more power than any stock 390 ever dreamed of at ALL rpm. I did have the proper supporting cast however!
