Lightbulb Hydro = Electricity

I was talking to a couple of my American friends and told them my "hydro" went out..... They were like "what is hydro?" I told them that it was electricity. Is this hydro thing a Canadian thing or what, eh?

No....LOL! In Canada we call electricity hydro....I guess it's a Canadian thing. Instead of saying "The electricity went out" we say "the hydro went out". I guess thats just one more thing that makes us Canadian, EH!

Without hesitation I would have thought your water supply had failed if you had said that to me.

water + electricity = shocking results.

So I do not normally associate the two. Except when thinking of ex wives.

What aboot when the water is off? What do you guys say?

Most of our electric power in Texas comes from generators fired by natural gas, but we do not call it "Gas" or "Natural". Some of our generators are fired by coal, but we do not call it "Coal". Both of these fuels turn steam turbines, so I guess the best name would be "Steam". It will be hard to explain to foreign visitors how alternating steam comes through wires into my house.

Maybe it has to do with how power is generated. Common ways it can be done is by hydroelectric (rivers and dams), hydro-thermal (coal and oil fired steam), thermonuclear (fission fired steam) or solar. Just guessing but is most of the power generated in Canada done by hydroelectric?

Electricity to Us in the West is called POWER.

More Power ?

AR ! ar ar ar

Canada has Coal, Natural Gas burning plants that generate most of the power in Canada.

In Newfoundland they have Hydro electric & Gas powered Plants.
In the Toronto area.... there are Nuclear Plants.

In Alberta & Saskatchewan we have Green power generated by Huge Wind Turbines.
Our LRT system is completely powered by these Wind Turbines

We have a couple of them on the Family farm In Sask.

That's exactly why we call it that... Our #1 power delivery company was called Ontario Hydro, and is now called Hydro One.

Also, I believe that our first power plant was a hydro-electric plant at Niagra Falls.

You are correct, and that's where the term "hydro" for electricity originated. There I go again, spouting facts no one cares about!

here on the east coast, it's generated by water ( rivers and tidal plants) coal, oil, oil emmulsion, nuclear, and wind

there is a place here that had power at thier logging camp, long b4 the rest of the province ever got power. the camp was founded in 1895

http://collections.ic.gc.ca/electric/english/

it's about 45 mins from here to drive to the old mill site. you can drive right to it durning the summer months. or anytime of the year with a big enough truck
