I was talking to a couple of my American friends and told them my "hydro" went out..... They were like "what is hydro?" I told them that it was electricity. Is this hydro thing a Canadian thing or what, eh?
No....LOL! In Canada we call electricity hydro....I guess it's a Canadian thing. Instead of saying "The electricity went out" we say "the hydro went out". I guess thats just one more thing that makes us Canadian, EH!
Most of our electric power in Texas comes from generators fired by natural gas, but we do not call it "Gas" or "Natural". Some of our generators are fired by coal, but we do not call it "Coal". Both of these fuels turn steam turbines, so I guess the best name would be "Steam". It will be hard to explain to foreign visitors how alternating steam comes through wires into my house.

Maybe it has to do with how power is generated. Common ways it can be done is by hydroelectric (rivers and dams), hydro-thermal (coal and oil fired steam), thermonuclear (fission fired steam) or solar. Just guessing but is most of the power generated in Canada done by hydroelectric?
