When I shut off my 98 Exp., 5.4, I hear a whining sound ( almost like an electric motor is running down or maybe air moving through constricted passageway - gurgle sound) . It is near the top of engine toward the back. It lasts for about 8 or 9 seconds.
It's air moving through the hard plastic vacuum hose that goes from the IAC valve to the intake. This hose is also responsible for funky whistling noises on deceleration. Replace it with a 26" length of 3/4" heater hose and everything gets much quieter.
I always thought it was my air conditioner, but it turned out to be the hose. Top of the engine, towards the back.
It could be the A/C compressor, but what bothers me is that you get the same symptoms from that crazy hose.
The hose costs $2.00 - it's not much of a gamble if I turn out to be wrong
Is the noise the same one you hear when the truck starts up and gets underway? It could be the LLS compressor - the "8 or 9 seconds" part bothers me, because the hose issue only lasts for a few seconds.

I spent a little more time listening to that noise. It lasts for up to 12 seconds. The pitch rises and the volume of the sound decreases over tht 12 seconds. I Do Not hear it when I start the engine.
Maybe it is the air condition ing pressure equalizing out.

Are there any other precipitating factors relating to the noise? Or does it always happen when you shut down, and that's it?
