I'm almost afraid to ask...

All,
I've been reading the debate centering around 6.0ltr diesels vs the venerable 7.3ltr...

I have an '01 XLT PSD 2wd crew now, which is for sale (check the classifieds).

I recently ordered up an '04, a January build, due 1st week of Feb...it's the exact same truck, except for the engine/trans, and some other little stuff I wanted this time around...I went with the 6.0ltr and five speed auto.

Question to the forum is this:
"How does the new 5spd compare to the older E40D?"

I drove this new '04 combo, and I'm real impressed with it. Can't wait to take delivery.

However, while everyone's either ranting & raving about (or defending) the new 6.0ltr, I've yet to see anything on the trans, and how it stacks up.

Anyone? any experiences or comments on the five sp auto? I'd love to hear it...good, bad, or indifferent. I'm really looking forward to having that extra gear.

btw - I use my truck for vintage racing (tow vehicle). I pull about 5000 - 5500lbs. This is with an enclosed 20' Pace trailer w/my vintage Porsche in it.

Looking fwd to hearing from anyone.
Thanks
Thom Kuby

Thanks, emtabmm...

Since you do this for a living (I'm assuming this) are there any generic "gotchas", or standing TSBs on this 6.0ltr/5sp trans combination?. Things I could get the dealer to resolve before leaving the lot?

I work with a fairly large dealer (Tuttle-Click, Irvine, Ca) simply because I live out in the middle of nowhere...and I really am reluctant to entrust my truck to the local guys - simply because the "TQM" just isn't there. I'd rather drive the 6-hr round trip, and let T-C work it. There is a very good diesel guy at TC. As a result of the distance involved, I try to assemble a laundry list of stuff for T-C to fix or look at - this approach has worked out real well for me. My '01 needed some things done via warranty coverage, and T-C Ford does a good job. No real complaints.

Also, I bought an ESP on the '01. I'd Like to do the same for the '04. Any opinion there? (ford vs aftermarket ext. warrantys)

Cheers - great forum btw...

No msgs, might be a few "bugs" 1st year but nothing i'd worry about.

Ford esp all the way. Instant coverage at any dealer. "No hassle"

Tmk,

The new 5R tranny is very nice. There have been a few glitches, but not near as many as the 6.0 engine has had. I've got one buddy with a 6.0 and no real problems except some idling problems. A friend of HIS had a 6.0 bought back by Ford ('03) due to excessive problems.
Personally I'd keed your 7.3 one more year and THEN get the new 6.0. If it ain't right by then, Ford will be bankrupt .

Funny you should mention it... A buddy just stopped by as I was completing the cat-back install on my 5.4L. He has the 7.3L PSD. His dad has the 6.0L PSD. He says that his dad's kicks his a$$, "go figure" (in his words)! So, in a nutshell, I think you'll be fine with the 6.0 PSD.

BTW, I naturally mentioned he should get a chip for his PSD for even MORE power (oh-oh-ohhhh)!
