Drive Train vibration

Unhappy Drive Train vibration

I have a 1997 Expedition that have a vibration. The vibration comes in at 45 MPH up. It changes only with vehicle speed and a little with floating the gas peddle. When traveling above 45 you can place the transmission in neutral and still have the vibration. I had the drive line balanced and no change. I took it into the transmission shop and they put it on the rack and brought it up to 45 MPH. They stated the vibration was in the Transfer case area. So I pulled the transfer case and went through it replacing all of the bearings. No change. I put the truck up on jacks and pulled the drive line. Then starting the truck bringing it up to 45mph and the vibration was still there. I took the truck to Ford they stated the problem was a cracked transmission mt. which holds the exhaust pipe. This was caused by worn motor mounts. I removed the plate and no changes. Other then the vibration everything works great. Could I have missed something in the Transfercase or could it be a bearing on the output shaft of the Trans. Any Ideas.

Yeah, one idea based on what's going on with our '97 EB 4x4. Apparently the early '97 models had a funky rear drive shaft (at least with the 4x4) that has a double u-joint at the front and a single in the rear. The double u-joint in the front has a centering ball that is worn out on ours with 77,000 miles. This causes a squeaking similar to a failing u-joint and a vibration starting at about 45 mph. New driveshaft from Ford is due in tomorrow that will hopefully fix it.

Thanks for the tip. What turned out was a problem with the motor and exhaust mounts. The exhaust and mounts have become bound. This caused a crack in the exhaust mount plate at the transmission mount. Replaced the mount and ford has a procedure to equalize the exhaust and motor mount. The procedure where you loosen the mounts putting the engine in forward and bring the engine up to 2000rpm with the brakes on. Then put in reverse and bring the engine up to 2000 rpm. repeat again and tighten the mounts. This helped alot. Ford suggested if this did not work replace the motor mounts and re-equalize the system. This fixed the problem. They have also had a problem with the exhaust system vibrations which they sell a weight that bolts on to the exhaust. You might check into this.
Good luck It took me 4 months and 3 repair shops to finall find and fix the problem.

Hmmmmm....very interesting! My wifes 97 EB does the SAME damn thing! Guess I will have to check in to your fix and see if that works for me as well. I noticed on hers though, it only does it when OD is off..kind of weird

ENGINEERDAD, did the new driveshaft fix the problem for you?? And if it did, did you go with a replacement 3 joint shaft again of did you go to a 2 joint shaft?? if you went to a 2 joint shaft was there anything else you had to do??
