Torque converter?

I have a 79 f-150 4x4 with a 400 thats pretty worked and i was wondering if i should get a torque converter for it. What would a torque converter do for my truck? Also how would i pick which torque converter to use? This may sound dumb, but i really have no idea what they do.

what cam do you have? how hard does it lope. that is what a stall convertor is for, to make use of the engines power band. rule of thumb. get a stall that is 500 rpm before your powerband. the best thing to do is go get call the cam manufacturer and tell them all about your motor and truck and tranny. tell them what cam you have what gear ratio you have. they should tell you what stall speed you need and what gear ratio you need to match that stall. then you are in business. a stall convertor is like a regular torque convertor with the exception that the stall convertor starts turning the tranny when you get to a higher than stock rpm or stall speed. if your cam is not too radical and does not lope very hard. just get some higher gears and a small stall maybe like a 2200. my 302 i made needs probably around a 2400. but now i am broke. i see that you have the edelbrock cam so you should be good with just a 3.55-3.73 rear end. but it would not hurt to get the 2200 stall. that is if your cam does not lope to hard.
