98 EB Expedition 4x4 problems

My 4 wheel drive seens to be out but the transfer case and selector switch seems to be working. It will go into 4wh and low range but just doesn't lock in the front. Can anyone tell me Ford used a vacuum system like the Dodge 4x4's or if it's electric all the way through with electric motors? I'm hoping there will be a cheap fix. The vehicle has 57,000 miles so either way I'm a little down on it right now. Thanks

There is a vaccuum system on these truck too. There is a vacuum motor on the fron differential covered by a plastic splash gaurd. there are lines that run from here to the firewall. check these lines. I have heard of cracked lines on these before!

I just had to have the vacum lines replaced on my 98 XLT. Same deal, 4X4 light stayed on when selected, but no power to the front wheels. It cost me about $95 to have them replaced by the dealer. Good luck.
