I was driving to get coffee with my two boys this morning (temp 20 degrees) when I noticied that when I turned my steering wheel in either direction, a loud thump can be heard and felt.
A few questions now.
1. Pitman arm? If so, how much at dealer.
2. Can I still drive it?
3. Is there any TSB'S on this symptom that could off set the price of repair?
If you have a grease gun, you could try greasing the linkages on the passenger front side of the truck. You can even get to them when the truck is on the ground. As for the TSBs, try your local library, they might have a subscription to the ALLDATA database. ALLDATA has the TSBs from ford.
TSB's aren't synonymous with recalls. All a TSB does is tell everyone that a fairly sizeable number of owners have a similar complaint. If the problem is big enough, the manufacturer might issue a recall, but most TSB's are informative only.
FYI, my front end has been popping for a long time as have many others around here. I posed a question several months ago and got a wide array of answers. Try searching for "popping" within this forum.

Now, do you mean when you turn the wheel in either direction "all the way or close to it"? If so, I had the same problem and had the dealer look at it while I was in for something else. They said they removed the front crossmember, cleaned the mating surfaces, coated the mating surfaces with "liquid metal" and re-installed. Been about 6,000 miles and no problems at all.
