draining torque convertor

i recently took my truck to the shop to have all the fluid drained from my transmission and torque convertor. they told me there that they couldn't do that as my truck would probably not leave the lift if they did. they said that the new fluid was too thick and would mess up the convertor. is this a bunch of bs or is it true?

New fluid will loosen up gunk that will sometimes cause the valve body to stick. They have obviously had a bad experience and had some liability. There is some basis for it but generally not what people say. It wouldn't stop me. Just because you change the fluid the transmission won't be clean. You might be better off with multiple pan droppings instead of a total fluid change, another common story. If tranny is dirty you will need to do multiple changes over a year period to get it clean. That is a fact. Highly recommend adding an external tranny filter.

More than likely the fluid is either burnt or varnished. If that is the case then they are correct. In the case of burnt, its burnt clutch matierial that turns the fluid dark. New fluid can make the burnt clutches come apart or wash debris into the valve body and stick valves. In the case of varnish, the new fluid (which is full of detergents) will wash the sticky deposits, which coat the inside of the transmission loose, and will stick the valves in the valve body or stop up the trans cooler.

It is common practice for most oil change shops to decline to change transmission fluid if its in bad shape. Some will but will require you to sign a release saying they are not responsible for any problems that result.

You need to have a reputable transmission shop check the tranny for you.
