Hello men, i am about to undergo a pretty big project. Front right fender needs to be replaced and hood and the bumper.. gosh darnn sister crashed my 99 v10!!!! grr. i have a garage to do all this in, i was wondering what it takes to get the fender off and how hard it is to paint it, i have a sprayer and paint hookups. i mean if i put it on correct is therea chance all the repairs could look ****ty? if painted nice? thanks all, morgan
I'm sure if you look under your front right fender, the bolts inside your hood, inside your door, and headlights area all come off.. I could be wrong, but it's a general idea of where to look.
Just remember, the prepping is the most important thing you do, defore painting it. Make sure you have it color matched to the rest of your truck, or it will be noticeable.
If you have no experience in painting I wouldn't learn how on such an expensive vehicle. I would go ahead and bolt on all the parts, saves paying a shop $40-$60 an hour. I have painted several small or cheaper projects (tractor, farm truck etc.) but I still would try to paint the family car. A professional quality sprayer and air regulator system will quickly eat up anything you save.
I am going to assume that the V10 is in a F250/350 :
Youwill need to remove the grille, the headlights (there is a special tool to get the clips out see your ford dealer) There is two bolts on the bottom of the fender, behind the wheel, the wheel well will need to be removed, there is two or three bolts at the bottom of the fender in front of the tire, One or two on the back edge (open the door and look at the edge of the fender, there might be a rubber seal you need to remove, held in with clips usually). I am thinking you need to remove the cowl peice (under the wipers, i think it covers a bolt. then the bolts and hood bumper ontop of the fender. The headlights and wipers are the biggest pains in the butt in switching out the fender. I assumed you have already dropped the bumper.
As for painting it, if you bolt it on then take to a paint shop you will most likely get no warranty on the paintwork, they cannot cut the panel in once it is on the vehicle, there for it isnt tottally sealed to the weather, and rust becomes a problem.
I think you can do a halfway decent job @ home with medium cost sprayer. As long as your compressor is big enuff to handle the CFM needed by the paint gun.
yeah, so how much does the tool cost for the headlights, and is it really required to do this? and why does the grill need to be removed to get to the fender? if i were to get the hood and fender from a junk yard, and bring them into a paint shop it wouldnt be that much to paint them if i sanded them down a whole bunch and paybe primered it before hand? ? all this of course getting the truck paint matched.
Grille has to come out to get the headlights off. The Headlights are held in by four clips that run thru the Radiator support, The top two are easy but its the bottom two that are almost impossible to get to. Maybe somebody else who is doing collision work has a better way to get them out? I am not sure on the tool one of our bodyguys had one already.
So im thinking bring the truck and get it color matched to get the new fender and a hood (which i am hoping to find at a junkyard) painted.
Yeah, thanks everyone for the help, maybe when i get deep into the project I might have some questions for you guys for now though, wish me good luck..
