Hey everyone, I am kind of new to the ranger world, so I dont know a whole lot about these trucks yet. I just got rid of my '86 jeep Comanche for my '98 Ranger. I have a 3.0/ automatic /4X4 /4.10 gears. So far I have taken the silencer out of the airbox, and thrown on a cat back exhaust. I thought I could go back to an aoutomatic, but I am now wishing I had held out and foun a manual. This tranny takes forever to shift, I need to do something to it before I go crazy. Does anyone know of a shift kit for these trucks? I know this truck would be a lot faster if I could get this transmission shifting the way I want it. Does the JET chip effect the transmission, or just the engine? I am kind of a performance junkie, so I want this thing to shift as hard an fast as possible without breaking anything else in the driveline. I am open to any ideas, so please help me out with any info you might have.
Thanks
Chuck
A chip makes a auto shift quicker along with some hp. Some so quick you'll pound 2nd gear if you don't take it easy while the trans is still cool. Apten and Diablo seem to be the best. I actually haven't got a chip because I don't feel like I'm getting what I'm paying for since I have a manuel. If you have any other engins mods you're planning do them first so you can have your chip optimized for them. Otherwise you'll have to send it in and pay almost full price to get it recalibrated.
make sure theres nothing wrong with the tranny. it shouldnt be taking that long to shift. maybe you should take it in for a tranny flush first, to see if that helps.
I have a '95 3.0l with a 4R44E tranny; it was a fleet vehicle for the first 60k miles, aii city miles.
First thing I did was a full tranny service because of shifting as you described. That made it better, but it still seemed "casual" about shifting to me- it was very comfortable between gears (which I knew was not good for it). I had a TransGo shift kit installed ($250) at the tranny shop, and it has been very happy ever since. The shop advised that when they rebuild a 4R44E they install that kit as a standard solution.
