anyone here have experence with zero decking an engine, ive looked arround and cant find anything about it, i know what it is and what the benefits would be but id kinda like a procedure
Zero decking brings the deck of the block and the piston at zero clearance. This means that your head gasket is the only thing determining how far the piston is away from the head when it is at TDC. This increases compression but also makes the engine less prone to detonation than the same compression engine with below the deck domes. Basically for an optimal build you want the piston to come up to the top of the deck and compression to be determined by the compustion chamber and the piston dome/dish.
...please more elaboration for the uninformed ones like myself
Ratsmoker, could you go into the zero deck conversation a little further please? I run 10:1 pistons in my 390 right now and want to get every edge possible to put huge torque on the back tires.
Zero Decking:
1. Are the edelbrock heads designed for this or do you have to specify this when you order them (my Christmas present to myself one day).
2. Does zero decking cause any more noticeable wear on the pistons than whatever a normal piston to head deck distance would cause on the compression and ignition stroke?
3. Do the valves have to be shaved (shortened) any in the case of zero decking?
OK, that's enough for now. Sorry for the extra questions, Doc.
There is nothing special about it nor any disadvantages. You are just making sure that when the piston hits TDC the outer portion of it is even with the deck. THe edel heads will give you about 10.25:1 with a zero deck and the L2291F30 pistons.
