Headers for 460 in a 56?
I am planning the build up of my 1956 f100. It currently has a 390/4spd, but im switching to a 460/c6 combo. I was wondering what headers other people have found that work with or with-out modification for this. I know of the Sanderson headers, but I want a full length type header. I would like to keep the exhaust inside the frame, but I might just go with some fenderwell exit over the frame headers from L&L. So please let me know of any type of headers that might/will work. thanks.
So far as I know, you have 2 easy options:
1) As mentioned above, Ford manifolds
2) The Sanderson headers (which is what I'm using)
Beyond that, you might look into building your own/having a set custom built; failing those tedious/expensive options, you might:
look at using full-size F100/150 headers from a mid-70s-early 80s 460 application. I have no idea whether they will work or not, and I've never seen anyone do this; however, in talking to a '56 owner with a MII setup and a (ahem) BB Chevy, he stated he simply used std. Chevy truck headers & they fit fine. He also said the pass. car headers would not work. The obvious drawback to this is finding a speed shop/exhaust shop who might work with you on this, as you don't need several sets that didn't work.
For my part, I was willing to sacrifice a few lb.-ft. of torque downstairs with the short headers, as I won't have much traction anyway.
