Maybe i'm going crazy, but is there a connection between the auto door locks, and the tailgate lock? Many times i've jumped out of the truck to get something out of the bed and the tailgate is locked. I haven't found any connections as to when its happening, just seems random. Anyone else experience this?
As far as I know the lock in the gate is not eletric as are the door locks. Seem to me that this has not changed on the 02 and newer trucks, but I could be wrong.
My 2001 def. has a manual lock for the tailgate, so I have not
experienced what you describe. Maybe someone with an '02 can chime
in here if Ford added some kind of electric lock in the newer
models. Sorry I couldn't be of more help w/ this one.
do you have the notoriose bowed tailgait? my gate has a slight bow in the center and 3 out of 5 times ill get out and the gate will be relocked without my locking it. very frustrating
I have a 2000 F350. My gate also locks by it's self from time to time. It started doing it after I lubed up the locks and hinges.
It's frustrating. What is the cure?

Tailgate Lock?????
2002 F-250 Lariat
Tailgate has a lock but it is NOT power/electronic. Ford did not have that option in 2002 (not sure about 2003)
My tailgate lock also locks itself half the time. It's been happening since the first day. Next time I take my truck to the dealership, I'll have them tear it apart and do something about it. Until then, I just make it a habbit of carrying my key with me when I need to open the tailgate. It's getting annoying so I'll make some time soon to go to Ford. I'll keep you guys posted on the reason why/fix.
I've got a '03 dually and it has a manually keyed lock on the tailgate. Sounds to me if you've got problems, you've got reason enough to take advantage of the relatively short warranty period. I have to..........my 3.73LS is toast after 1400km (900 miles)
You're not going crazy. I've been experiencing this same phenomenon since I received my truck (I've had it for exactly one year and 20,000 miles). I began to think it was tied to the electric door locks, but realized it should have unlocked as well as locked using that feature. I intend to have my dealership look at it.
Thanks for all the input, it seems as if its a fairly common problem. A trip to the dealer?? Who's got the time for their song & dance? If anything else goes wrong i'll bring up the issue. Has anyone heard of any recall info on this problem? Oh well, time to go play in the snow!
