88 E-150 surge problem..please help

Hi, Happy Holidays and thanks in advance,

I have an 88 E-150 4.9L, I have about 60k on it and it runs great. I have 2 minor issues I would like to resolve over the winter, I have it garaged and don't use it much winter time.

1. The Van has a 5 speed stick shift, and when the A/C is first turned on the engine surges. Then with the A/C on: When I take off when the A/C compressor cycles it will surge making take off annoying with the manual tranny.

2. The second issue is when I start the engine during hot weather the engine always stalls once and then fires up. During extreme cold everything works perfectly.

I have the time now to get into it and would like to try to resolve it. I realize these are hot weather related and its winter but I have plenty of time now.

Thanks
Frank D

Hi Motorhead89,

By surge I mean RPM's go up and down from lets say 700-1500.

Lets say I start the vehicle first time in the morning outside temp is high 80's. The van will stall the first time. After I start the second time it runs. Now I turn the A/C on and the engine will surge from 700-1500 until I work the gas pedal. Then its OK.

Now while driving with the A/C on if I go to take off from a light and the compressor cycles the engine will surge while under the load of the take off. 5 speed manual tranny.

I hope this additional info helps.

Thanks again,
Frank D

One of the sensors or servo driven units are bad. I'd start by cleaning the idle air control valve on top of the throttle body. Also, pull codes especially if you see a "Check Engine" light. There's a tech article on here that shows how to pull codes out of the EEC-IV computer. The codes might point you in the right direction. Also, I understand the stalling thing might be a fuel pressure problem. If cleaning the IAC valve fixes the surging but does not fix the first startup stall, try changing the fuel filter.
