I have had extremely good luck with this site so please help again. My 97 Explorer AWD is making a very lite clicking sound at slow speeds(5-10mph) especially noticeable when coming to a stop or leaving a stop and only when coasting. Touching the brakes or turning seem to have no effect on the clicking. There is no vibrations felt nor can you hear the clicking with the windows down or traveling down the road.
Secondly if I turn left or right and accerate I get a slipping sensation coming from the rear-end its almost as if the whole axle housing is shifting. There is a sliding noise associated with this slipping sound and it sounds like it is coming from under the back seat area.
I have a 98 AWD and had what may be a similar clicking noise that you are referring to. In my case the CV at the top of the front drive shaft was bad. I was able to determine this by removing the front drive shaft and driving it around in 2wd. Since having the drive shaft replaced the noise is gone.
Thanks for the reply. I originally thought this but it doesn't sound like the typical cv joint clicking, it is very light and is not affected by steering at all. My experiences are that bad cv joints get louder the tighter that you turn the wheels.
Sorry I guess that I read your reply to fast, Yea unfortunatly I already had that happen to me. The clicking of the drive shaft was alot louder than the clicking that I have going on, this clicking can hardly be heard and not at all if there is any other noise in the car. It seems to be coming from the front left of the vehicle. Some older vehicle that had actual speedo cables sometimes made a slight clicking sound, this reminds me of that???????????????????????????????????????????
My Mountaineer was doing this. You could barely hear it but it was there at a very slow speed. I changed the AWD transfer case fluid and it went away. I have now driven about 15,000 more miles and the clicking sound has not returned. It's cheap to do this if you do it yourself. You will need 2 quarts of automatic transmission fluid [check your manual for which type] and a funnel tube that screws in to the top of the ATF container. It might or might not work for you, but it soved my problem.
