I went to pick my son up from work last nite and we had ice took her out of auto in to 4w.high,drove 15 miles, ok,backing out of parking space turning left it got in to a bind and stoped.Idid not force it put her back in auto and drove home .have noticed a light rump rump rump on right front that i thought was a tire, any help would be appreciated.
I have had the same problem. I have fixed it on my 94 by taking the hubs out cleaning them completely then letting them soak in a mix of Lukus oil treatment, syn gear oil and anti-cease. When I reinstall them I make sure that they are installed "wet" and that there is about a tablespoon of the mix in the cover of the hub. I try to do this in the spring and the fall while I check the brakes and repack the barrings. My wife’s 91EB did the exact same thing you describe last weekend. I need to get that one apart and clean it up. As soon as I started the 2x a year servicing of the front hubs on my 94xlt I have had no problems with the 4WD. My wife’s 91EB, that I got last spring, has not had the same treatment. I have not had a chance to get at the hubs. (I was told they were new from ford dealer and was given a receipt so I did not worry about it) Guess I should have been a bit more attentive.
One other thing of note. Have you used the 4wd at all before this recently? I used to have a hell of a time with the 4wd on my 94 if I let it sit all summer and then tried to use it during the first snow. If your exp has not had the hubs serviced and has not been used for a while (all summer) engagement and disengagement can be sticky. I attribute this to old cold grease that is hard as a rock and the hubs being dry of lubricant making the auto hubs stick. I used to make a habit of engaging it once a week and driving a little bit but being careful to keep it slow and no tight turns especially when I am on asphalt. This is partly why I now service the hubs 2x a year and why I use the mix I do to lube the hubs. With the extra care and attention to the hubs I have no trouble with the 4WD for the last three years. Now I just wish I could have this same luck with my transmissions
Good Luck
