I have 87 Aerostar my wife was driving and it just died had to get it towed the 2 drivers said it was my fuel pump ,it was -15 the wind is very cold the gas has been realy cheap these days I was thinking maybe ice in the gas but would it do that ?? Also the fuel pump whare is it before I go outside and freeze my but off I need to know as much. The engine turns but not enought to start And I hope the gas pump is not in the gas tank ,But I have a feeling it is CRAP it cold out there..Hope somebody can help out there
On the fuel pump according to my Chilton's manual it depends upon whether or not you have the fuel injection system or the carbureted system. The carbureted system uses a mechanical fuel pump bolted on the lower left side of the cylinder block. The fuel injection system has an in-line fuel pump on 2.3L engine mounted on the chassis at the rear of the vehicle, or on 3.0L and 4.0L engines the fuel pump is located in the gas tank as part of the fuel guage sender unit.
Are you sure you're having a fuel problem? I guess it could be water frozen in the fuel lines or the filter, but I would think that would have showed up on initial startup, not while you're driving.
Sounds more like a power problem if "the engine turns but not enough to start." Of course, check fuel pressure if you suspect the fuel system, but first be sure that you have enough cranking power in the battery and that you are getting a spark to the plugs.
Also, search this forum on topics related to the fuel pump, fuel system, starting problems, etc. More than likely, someone has had the same problem and you'll find your answer already posted. Besides, you can learn a lot from reading the posts of others and seeing how they troubleshoot such problems.
