No Kick down gear

My friend just got an 86 ranger with a 5speed and a 4banger and it must not have a kick down gear for instince when I stomp the throttle on my 79 F-350 460 my rpms will go anywhere from 2000rpms to 4500rpms and im instantly sucked back in my seat.
That is not the case with his ranger he let me drive it a few days ago. So we were going down a stretch of country road when we came up on a big tractor trailer that was going about 55 in a 70 zone so I downshifted and pulled over a lane to pass him I soon relized that I was not traviling past him very fast so I pushed the gas to the floor and my rpms went from 2500 to 2600 in nearly a second when as I said my truck skips nearly 3000 rpms in less than a second his rpms went from 2500 to 3000 in nearly 7 seconds it took me about that long to pass the truck in front of us after that little mishap we began talking about swapping in a 3.0 or evan a 4.0 any ideas for more power or how to make the trans kick would be appreiated.

Thanks for any help..........

first, if it is a 5 speed it doesnt "kick down". the only way to kick it down is with the shifter. Try downshifting again. Remember this isnt an f 350 its a 4 banger.
